To understand how the CoC Key works, consider how the Captain of Crush training system divides your grippers into three categories:

  1. warm-up gripper: it's easy to close, but this is what primes you for the hard work ahead.
  2. working gripper: you can only close it for a few reps or so, but this is where you make progress, getting stronger in return for the effort you put into these reps.
  3. challenge gripper: even after your best effort, there's still some daylight in between the handles, and Joe Kinney (the first man certified on the Captains of Crush No. 4 Gripper) would say that training on your challenge griper is where you make your best gains, if you do things right.
